Ancestral Goa
About
Goa has an interesting mythological story associated with its creation, which is rooted in Hindu mythology. According to the legends, the sage Parashurama, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, played a significant role in the formation of Goa.
As the story goes, the region that is now Goa was originally a part of the vast landmass known as ‘Konkan’ which extended along the western coast of India Parashurama shot an arrow into the Arabian Sea. Miraculously, the arrow landed and created a landmass, which became what is now known as Goa. This act of creation by Parashurama is believed to have cleansed him of his sins.
This mythological story of Parashurama’s creation of Goa is considered sacred by the locals and has become an integral part of Goan folklore and cultural identity. It symbolises the cleansing of sins, the emergence of a new land, and the divine
intervention in shaping the destiny of the region.
Goa is a state located on the western coast of India, known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and Portuguese-influenced architecture. It is the smallest state in terms of area and the fourth smallest in terms of population in India. Goa has a unique blend of Indian and European cultures, making it a popular tourist destination both domestically and internationally.
Goa’s colonial past is evident in its architecture, with numerous churches, cathedrals, and old mansions dotting the landscape. The Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, houses the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier and is a significant religious site for Christians. The state’s capital, Panaji (or Panjim), showcases charming Portuguese-style buildings, narrow streets, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Besides its natural and architectural attractions, Goa is famous for its vibrant festivals and cultural events. The most well-known festival is the Goa Carnival, a colourful and lively celebration filled with music, dance, parades, and elaborate costumes. Some of these traditions have been lost, forgotten or are not being practiced anymore. At Ancestral Goa, you learn about the various customs of Goa, through a visual and audio aid.
